Signalling

Until the formation of the South Downs Light Railway there was no signalling on the railway, although there was a signal box, which was painted in rather unusual style (pink & black). All has now changed though, with the 'box being resplendent in SR Green & Cream externally, while inside the building is lined and insulated and complete with "pot bellied" stove.

On the operational front there is already an ex BR sixteen lever frame which is already working the signalling system around the railway electrically, complete with track circuiting and signal repeaters.

Plan of signals

Already in position are 7 miniature upper quadrant signals mounted on BR MR style posts (with GWR finials). These are located at the head of the station as "platform" starter & protection for the "pool" crossing, two more provide protection & calling on facilities at the other end of the platform, while two more are for the protection for the "straight" crossing and the distant for the "pool crossing", the final signal provides protection to the other "leg" of the "straight" crossing.

In addition to the signals already in position, there are 3 further signals which are at present being modified for electrical operation. These will be situated by the loco shed to protect the point there, which will also have a ground signal and at the end of the "top curve" to protect the "shed" crossing.

We also have the luxury of our own internal telephone system with 'phones in the lobby, engine shed, signal box & on the platform, further 'phones will be installed in other locations as and where they may be required.
